Back when I was making Kay’s Best at Big Creek General Store! 2013…’ish!

Our Story

It all started with the BEST breakfast potatoes I’d ever eaten. They were made by my Aunt Yollie; she was very patient in teaching me how to make them. Which I happily did until, GASP, I couldn’t get the seasoning any longer. What to do?

My husband encouraged me to come up with my own blend. I was dubious, but he said “You’re a great cook; you can do this!” Well, it took about 6 months to get it right. There was one last ingredient I just couldn’t nail. But then on a family road trip to Colorado, I finally found the original seasoning my aunt used. Happy day! I bought 4 bottles!

Discovery #1 - The missing ingredient! Thank You, Lord!
Discovery #2 - This seasoning wasn’t even close to being as good as Kay’s Best!

That was in 1987!

At first, we just used it for ourselves. Then the positive comments of dinner guests got my attention. What did you put on the steak? How did you make these potatoes? Can I buy some? You should sell this!

So I did!

12-22-2020 Update

The Creek Fire in California is now part of the Kay’s Best story. The town of Big Creek was evacuated at 4:00 a.m. on September 5th, 2020. In what was to become the largest wildfire in CA history, 41 homes were lost in this town alone. Sadly, our home was lost that day. A 6 week evacuation adventure, a damaged production facility, personal challenges, and supply difficulties have conspired to keep this website down. Until today!

We are so grateful Kay’s Best can once again produce the best spice product in the United States! Does this sound like an exaggeration? Not according to our faithful customers!

1-11-2024 Update

So much has happened in the last 3 years! We retired from our day jobs, moved to Prescott, AZ, and bought a house with an awesome barn we planned to remodel as a commercial kitchen. After actively pursuing the long-time dream of outfitting our own commercial kitchen on our own property, we decided to look at other production possibilities. The amount of red tape and funding needed for our own kitchen wasn’t feasible for us.

Enter NoCo Community Kitchen in Prescott! It is a newly established commissary kitchen which exists to foster the small food business community in the Prescott area. Not only do we have the proper space to produce Kay’s Best, we also receive business coaching and are now part of a community of food entrepreneurs! Kay’s Best is extremely grateful to be a member of NoCo!!!
